The aged residents of Grandview West Mobile Home Park here are likely feeling they should have stayed mum after a double whammy of rent hikes hit their rental controlled park. Once completed, the 105-unit Valley Vista complex at 20801 San Ramon Valley Blvd. will be available to rent to low-income seniors 62 and older. Subsidies will prevent renters from spending more than a third of their incomes on rent and utilities. Low-income renters suing the city of Antioch for alleged racial discrimination are accusing city officials of censoring critical evidence. |

Federal rent aid program is selective

A federal stimulus program aimed at preventing tenants from being evicted because of the recession is arousing lots of interest but qualification guidelines are strict. The lead agency in distributing $3 million earmarked for Contra Costa has received 574 inquiries and 87 applications but has approved 16.
A reprieve for renters

A new Richmond ordinance spells relief for renters whose landlords go into foreclosure. Under the new ordinance, tenants can only be evicted under 12 specific circumstances. Foreclosure alone is not one of those circumstances.
Antioch City, Policy Sued for Discrimination

The Contra Costa Times covers a lawsuit filed by Bay Area Legal Aid on behalf of low-income African-American tenants in Antioch. The tenants allege that the Antioch police department's Community Action Team unfairly targets them as part of a "concerted and unlawful campaign to seek evidence which could lead to the termination of participants' Section 8 voucher benefits."
