A federal judge has ruled the rent control ordinance in San Rafael as unconstitutional, which will lead to steep rent increases for residents of the Contempo Marin Park.

The fate of the mobile home park, managed by Equity LifeStyle Properties has been in and out of court for seven years. Residents who paid $725 a month for mobile home property fees are facing a $1,200 increase. Mobile home owners are in a difficult situation since homes might have to be divided in order to move them.

Barring a court stay, the new rates will go into effect in April.
