Our 2026 Endorsed Legislation

Tenants Together advocates for, co-sponsors, and wins state legislation to change the status quo in the State Legislature for California’s 17 million tenants. We don’t have big real estate lobby money on our side: we have you.

Our member organizations decide and drive all of our legislative work, organizing on the ground to move their legislators on issues facing tenants in the community. Below are our member-approved legislative positions for 2026.

Bill: SB 436 (Wahab)

Extends the 3-day “pay or quit” period to 14 days, giving tenants extra time to pay missed rent before a formal eviction is filed.

Bill: SB 1243 (Durazo)

Temporarily pauses nonpayment evictions for tenant households who have lost income due to immigration detention actions.

Creates the Community Anti-Displacement & Preservation Program (CAPP) to acquire housing where tenants are at risk.

Gives mobile home tenants an option to purchase their property as a cooperative when it’s for sale.
