Mission and Vision
We Are Tenants Together!
Tenants Together is a statewide coalition of local tenant organizations dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of California tenants to safe, decent, and affordable housing.
As California’s only dedicated statewide renters’ rights organization, Tenants Together works to improve the lives of California’s tenants through capacity building, movement building, and statewide campaigns. Tenants together seeks to support and strengthen the statewide movement for renter’s rights.
We Envision a World…
… where tenants have housing security and are treated with dignity as equal members of the community.
Tenants are instrumental in building a system where housing is a human right, not a commodity.
Everyone has the right to physical and economic security.
We envision flourishing and sustainable communities, cultivated through self-determination and equity in decision-making on policy that affects their lives.
THEORY OF CHANGE

CORE STRATEGIES
As a statewide renter’s rights organization, Tenants Together focuses our efforts to support this change through these core strategies:
OUR BIG GOALS
In order to transform the housing landscape in California by 2034, we will focus our efforts on achieving these big audacious goals:
- Win statewide rent control and just cause for all California tenants through dismantling structural barriers (such as Costa Hawkins and the Ellis Act) and advancing new statewide and local protections
- Build and support strong and active local tenant groups leading the development of local policies and legislation in all California jurisdictions with a population over 100,000
- Add 1.4 million units of socially-owned, community-managed housing that is permanently affordable to the most impacted tenants and permanently removed from the speculative market by working in collabortion with labor, reproductive justice, environmental justice, and other movements
OUR CORE VALUES
We know housing is a human right; tenant rights are an essential part of fighting for justice and dignity
We believe in tenant self-determination and community control
We center the needs of people and communities that have historically been most harmed by oppression and housing violence
We teach and learn: tenant knowledge is power and leads to liberation
We are intersectional: The right to housing is aligned with other movements fighting against structural oppression and for social, economic, and racial justice
We are a movement led by tenants; ensuring the sustainability of our members, volunteers, and staff is the only way we will win
