We work on a statewide level with limited capacity, so we are ONLY able to return call of tenants whose neighbors are also impacted with urgent issues to learn about your rights and how to organize/advocate with your neighbors.
Helpline is a voicemail-based, which means that in order to connect with us, you will have to call us, leave a voicemail, and one of our volunteers will reach out to you via text message or phone call.
Once you call, press the corresponding number to leave a voicemail in either English or Spanish – select the number that corresponds to the language that you speak
Leave a voicemail, speaking as slowly and as clarly as yu can with your:
– Name
– Phone number
– City & zip code
– Are multiple tenants affected by the same issue? Yes or no.
– Description of your issue, including a brief summary of any written documentation or notices that you have received (including dates received) from landlord

No! Volunteers are highly trained, but are NOT lawyers. Most of them are tenants like you who have learned a lot about tenants’ rights through being their own advocates. If you need legal advice, please search by county in our Local Resource Directory.

No. We suggest that you call 2-1-1 for information about rental assistance or affordable housing.
No. We are a tenants’ rights non-profit, and our very limited resources are dedicated to supporting tenants. We also do not advise master tenants (i.e. one that is on the lease and rents out rooms to other tenants) with questions pertaining to their subtenants.
It can be helpful to prepare any notices from your landlord (rent increase, eviction, etc.), lease agreement, photo or video of housing conditions, or a timeline of events.
Tenants organizing begins with building connections between tenants to address immediate shared housing issues, affecting their building or community, and create ongoing solutions. If you and your neighbors are willing to work together our staff may connect tenants experiencing similar issues with organizing support or local tenant unions.
