San Francisco Examiner:

The Board of Supervisors voted 7-3 Tuesday to approve legislation that extends the eviction protections in place for those living in units built prior to June 1979, as they are covered by The City’s rent control ordinance, to those units built afterward.

The legislation was opposed by Supervisors Carmen Chu, Bevan Dufty and Sean Elsbernd. Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier was absent.

Mayor Gavin Newsom is against the legislation and is expected to veto it.  “I’m still holding out that we can have the full extent of just cause protections extend to most 1979 buildings,” Avalos said.

But in case the board cannot secure the eight votes to override the mayoral veto, Avalos has a second piece of legislation the board will vote on on Feb. 9 that would extend just cause evictions to buildings built post 1979 that are in foreclosure only. That version could gain Newsom’s support, it’s thought.
