Tenants Bring Class Action Lawsuit against Central Valley's Biggest Slumlord

A class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of tenants in properties owned by JD Homes, claiming that the landlord is not maintaining the properties. In addition, the lawsuit claims that the landlord has purchased foreclosed properties in some Fresno neighborhoods, contributing to blight in those areas as well. Tenants Together and Bet Tzedek Legal Services filed the lawsuit.

Renting a single wide trailer in a shady park. Trailer had water damage and what appeared to be mold. Mentioned it and then I noticed that someone had come in and painted over the areas of concerns. Faulty electrical system, plumbing problems. Rat infestation, oven quit working. Harrassed my fiance and threatend to call the sherrif because she was there.

I was a tenant in foreclosed house that had habitability issues. The new owners (investors) came in and agreed to fix everything within a reasonable fair amount of time. They did however agree to fix the plumbing issues right away. I signed a lease with them that included they were going to fix the plumbing issues. I gave them rent and waited 45 days of promise after promise. No working kitchen sink made the house uninhabitable. I found the legal grounds to withhold rent and notified the new owner that I was exercising my rights under civil codes.

Landlord constant harrassment and entry into the property to inspect our personal belongings, and when I wrote a formal letter to the landlord asking to stop the harassment the landlord retaliated by serving a termination of lease. Landlord entered the condo without any authorization to show to prospective tenants without any respect to our privacy. Landlord attempted to assault me when I came to turn in the keys to the property in front of the people that were cleaning the rental unit. Landlord tried to keep my security deposit of $2,000.00, but I applied my deposit as my last month rent.

For the last 3 years, every 3-4 weeks I would come down with cold or flu systems. I was admitted to the West L. A. Veterans Hospital three times with lung infections and had to have emergency breathing treatments 5 times in the 3 years that I lived at this apartment. The V.A. could not find out what was causing my problems. The lady that lived in my apartment before me, would get mail from time to time and I would call her to come pick up her mail.

My building is filled with mold and dust in all the vents. Pipes leak constantly, and recently the landlord turned down the water pressure in all units because his water bills were getting too expensive. Turns out the leaks were making his bills high, not tenant overuse of water. Something breaks in my apartment every week.
